Charlotte’s Caffeine Scene

From cozy neighborhood spots to chic, clean-lined cafes, the Queen City is brewing up a storm of superior Charlotte coffee standards and inventive interpretations of classics. Our Insider Guide gives you the low-down on the evolving caffeine scene.

Burr & Berry

You’ll find some of the best brews around town at this bite-sized coffee spot in the Lower South End. Burr & Berry has been delighting Charlotteans with tasty craft coffees that are mostly grab-and-go thanks to both a drive-thru and a “walk-thru.”

Their classic brews are spot-on, but if you’re craving something on the sweet side, try the Bee’s Knees (a latte with honey and brown sugar cinnamon) or the aptly named Chubby Bunny (cold brew topped with toasted marshmallow cream, white chocolate, and caramel syrup).

Night Swim Coffee

Though a relative newcomer to the Charlotte coffee scene, Night Swim Coffee has quickly made a splash in the Queen City. Aficionados rave about their rotating selection of single-origin coffees, while drinkers thirsty for novelty love their seasonal specialties.

With multiple locations throughout the city, including a roastery and cafe in South End, Night Swim is both an ode to craft coffee and minimalism, featuring gorgeously scaled-back interiors that really let the coffee shine.

Be sure to sample Head in the Clouds — a fan-favorite matcha latte featuring house-made rose syrup and oat milk.

Undercurrent Coffee

Tucked away in Plaza Midwood, Undercurrent Coffee almost immediately became a neighborhood staple since it opened its doors in 2018. The shop's laid-back design, featuring warm wood tones and plenty of natural light, creates a calming scene perfect for both work and relaxation.

Undercurrent takes its coffee seriously, offering a rotating selection of single-origin beans and house-made syrups that elevate their drink menu beyond the ordinary.

Their coffee is a major perk, but what really sets Undercurrent apart is its commitment to education. The shop regularly hosts coffee classes and tastings, allowing curious customers to deepen their appreciation for the art of the cup.

HEX Coffee

Located in the trendy Camp North End, HEX Coffee has evolved from an ambitious pop-up to one of Charlotte's most innovative coffee destinations. The industrial-chic space, with its high ceilings and concrete floors, provides a cool backdrop for enjoying their meticulously prepared pour-overs, espressos, and renowned “bright” brews.

Their kitchen turns out equally creative breakfast and lunch dishes that pair perfectly with their coffee. As the day progresses, HEX transforms into a natural wine bar, making it a unique all-day destination for Charlotte's food and drink enthusiasts.

Coco and the Director

For something completely different, this Uptown neighborhood coffee shop breaks the mold of the trendy and sleek coffee slinger, opting rather for a totally warm and cozy environment that’s more evocative of a mid-century diner.

This spacious cafe inside the Charlotte Marriott City Center has become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Coco and the Director's drink menu offers something for everyone, from classic drip coffee to indulgent specialty lattes.

The co-star here is their selection of house-made pastries — don't leave without trying one of their famous cronuts, a croissant-donut hybrid that sells out quickly each morning.

Enderly Coffee Company

For those seeking a coffee shop with a mission, Enderly Coffee Company in West Charlotte fits the bill. This family-owned roastery and cafe is dedicated to fostering community and creating opportunities in its neighborhood.

The warm, inviting space feels more like a friend's living room than a typical coffee shop, encouraging visitors to linger and connect. Enderly's coffee menu is straightforward but expertly executed, with their house-roasted beans taking center stage.

Take a Sip

These cool spots not only serve up excellent coffee but also provide unique spaces for work, relaxation, and connection. Whether you're a longtime local or brand new to the Queen City’s charms, exploring these coffee shops is sure to give you a flavorful taste of Charlotte's thriving bean scene.
