The Queen City Reigns Supreme

One visit to the Queen City, and you’ll be swept away by its innumerable charms and exceptional livability.

Capturing the dynamic energy of a booming metropolis, Charlotte remains a perennially enchanting Southern town that exudes small-town hospitality and warmth. Newcomers and long-time locals have found an exquisite lifestyle full of history, distinctive culture, and unbeatable recreation, both in Uptown and throughout the gorgeous greenways that dot the city.

What makes Charlotte so extraordinary lies in its ability to make you feel instantly at home. Call it good, old-fashioned southern hospitality, call it the tranquility of nature, or call it the pull of modern convenience; whatever you call Charlotte’s je ne sais quoi, it’s easy to see why so many choose to call it home.

The Charlotte lifestyle is regarded as being equal parts adventurous and tranquil. One moment you’ll be chatting with friends in a swanky rooftop bar overlooking the stellar skyline, and the next, you’ll be soaking up the sunrise views during a peaceful morning on the waterfront.

As the largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte is host to nearly a million residents of all lifestyles and interests. The metro excels at being a desirable vacation destination just as much as it has the almost magical ability to attract those looking to relocate for its incredible opportunities.

This exciting melting-pot energy is felt as you traverse down the city blocks of the buzzy Second Ward and its global culinary offerings, as well as in the multiplicity of artistic styles featured on homegrown murals and in local museums. All backgrounds and lifestyles are smitten with Charlotte’s charms.

Storied Past, Shimmering Future

For clues into its brilliant future, one simply needs to peer into Charlotte’s remarkable past. The city’s enduring appeal owes to its rich roots as an early hub of commerce and creativity.

Named for Queen Charlotte, the aptly nicknamed Queen City to this day maintains its regal character, especially in its architectural gems and creative outputs. The city is brimming with character, creating the perfect home base for a culturally exciting lifestyle.

Walking throughout the four wards of Charlotte, you’ll encounter lingering whispers of the past, from its antique facades of the historic homes, oak-shaded streets, and a curated city-wide ethos of fusing the old with the new.

Following the turn of the 19th century, Charlotte took its prominent place as a flourishing gold rush town — and you can still pan for gold today at the nearby Reed Gold Mine just 20 miles from Uptown.

A visit to Optimist Hall on the borders of Uptown allows you to glance into an 1892 cotton mill that’s been reimagined as a premium food hall with dozens of foodie-approved eateries. Or trek out a mile beyond Uptown to explore the NoDa neighborhood, a cluster of former mill villages that now house a modern arts district teeming with nightlife, dining, and music venues.

From the mid-20th century well into the 21st, Charlotte cemented itself as a vital city for commerce, especially in the banking, healthcare, and energy industries, where it continues to flourish as an economic leader.

As more entrepreneurial minds continue to flock to this innovative city, Charlotte’s future will only grow brighter as the city continually reinvents itself.

Ultramodern Uptown

The city is fueled by a communal desire to usher in the next best thing, which is why Charlotte’s downtown — distinctively known as Uptown — feels like it's always in motion. (The city center is situated atop a hill, so regardless of how you approach its heart, you’ll be heading upward.)

Uptown is the true pulse of Charlotte, with its compact city vibe, public transportation access, and surge of excitement and energy. Pedestrians and cyclists love the navigability of the area, and many Uptowners even forgo car ownership. The Charlottean lifestyle features a wide array of transportation options, making it a convenient city to live, work, and play.

Many of Charlotte’s most quintessential experiences can be discovered in Uptown, making it a can’t-miss neighborhood for anytime adventures. Uptown dishes out some truly tasty restaurants, pubs, food trucks, and cafes that span from flavor-rich Middle-Eastern fare to fall-off-the-bone barbeque and down-home Southern comfort food.

Try Alexander Michael’s, a stately Uptown institution serving beloved Charlotte-only dishes, like creamy 4th Ward Stroganoff, alongside heaping baskets of cajun french fries.

For a dose of straight-up Charlotte charm, grab a drink at the speakeasy-style Cellar at Ducksworth’s, proprietor of the most famous beer cellar in the city, offering 500 hard-to-find labels.

On the weekend, head down to LoSo and check out the craft brews at Protagonist, where you can sip straight from the source at this 15-barrel brewery.

If an inventive mid-morning meal is what you’re after, Charlotteans brunch with the best of them. You’ll find an impressive menu of options crafted specifically for the brunch bunch, from seafood Benedict to freshly fried doughnuts to decadent red velvet waffles and pancakes loaded with fresh whipped cream and seasonal berries.

Java lovers are also treated to near-endless options to get their caffeine fix, and many are devotees of Provided Coffee in the First Ward. This stamp-sized cafe serves complex blends made from Methodical Roaster beans and uses handcrafted syrups to create unconventional concoctions that keep the neighborhood coming back for more.

If shopping is more your scene, Uptown is your best bet for bespoke boutiques and handcrafted accessories. From traditional tailors specializing in menswear to vintage second-hand stores and record shops spinning rare vinyl, these city blocks have treasures in store for the most discerning of tastemakers.

Take a trip down to SouthEnd and enjoy the pet-friendly atmosphere at HiWire, where sports meets brews in a paw-sitively fun spot. Here, you can enjoy an after-work game of pool or table tennis while you sample what’s on tap.

The Charlotte lifestyle is especially tailored towards sports enthusiasts, thanks to an array of college and professional home teams ranging from hockey to soccer to basketball. Uptown is home to the Charlotte Hornets, the Carolina Panthers, and the Charlotte FC, and many more fans fill their free time with NASCAR at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

When you want to move from spectator to star, go practice your swing at Leatherman Golf or head down to Piedmont Social House for a round or two of bowling.

Charlotte truly has it all. It’s a modern mecca of public art installations, next-level shopping, Broadway shows, live jazz, and slowly-simmered jambalaya. Whatever your preferred flavor of fun, Uptown is dishing up something delicious year round — with a Cheerwine on top.
